Guided Movement for “Arriving in this Moment”: A 20 minute guided movement experience. Audio

Questions of Inquiry

  • How does intentionally being “in our bodies” impact our thinking and our writing?
  • From mindfulness exercises, to somatic practices, to dance/theatre-based movement explorations – How can being “in our bodies” make us better thinkers and writers; and even better humans?
  • How can approaching writing in this way, give us new perspectives and inspiration in other creative practices – whether dance, theatre, film, music or visual art?

Meet your Professor

Since I’m about to learn a lot about you, I should share some things about myself. You may address me as Celeste, if that feels comfortable to you. If not, you are welcome to call me Professor Celeste or Professor Miller. “Ms. Miller” is my least favorite way of being addressed. And please, never “Mrs.”

I came to Grinnell in 2011, after working for over thirty years as an independent artist – solo performer, choreographer of ensemble works and dance-based community projects animator. I teach in the Department of Theatre and Dance. I am the “and dance” part of the Department. I teach Movement for the Performer; Choreography: Developing Physical Ideas for the Stage; and Contemporary Dance in a Global Context: History & Theory. I have taught the seminar courses Embodied Experiences in the Environment and Dance, Human Rights and Social Justice. I also direct Dance Ensemble/ACTivate which is a movement-based performing ensemble embracing my Every Body approach to dancing. Together we train across disciplines and backgrounds to become powerful physically-based expressive movers. This fall we will be creating a online production; and in the Spring a production for Livestreaming.

I use she/her/hers pronouns. I am, as Emma Watson says, “self-partnered.” As a single parent I raised my daughter, who is now a 27-year old filmmaker in Atlanta. I live with my dog, affectionately known as “The Schmoo.” Dance is everything to me, and has been for my entire life. I live and breathe for dance – dance is how I make sense of the world, how I survive, and is at the core of everything I believe in; but I have a wide and inclusive definition of dance that makes room for Every Body. You can find out more about my passion, my professional work and research here. www.celestemiller.com
